Rose and Neroli Deodorant

Friday Feature

Join me as make recipes from much loved DIY bloggers and share my favourites. There is a whole world of DIY skincare blogging out there and I can't wait to show you some of my favourite recipes from those who taught me how to make skincare in the beginning.

Today I am making Marie's Rose and Neroli Deodorant from the blog Humblebee and Me!

I'm one of those strange humans blessed with the ability to skip wearing deodorant. While I still need something before a big workout, for general day to day activities I find that I can get by without deodorant with no noticeable stinkiness by the end of the day. With the change in weather though I think my luck has come to and end, and I've been noticing the need to wear a deodorant. Except I haven't been able to find one. So this is where DIY comes to the rescue!

This blend of virgin coconut oil, sweet almond oil, shea and cocoa butter is dreamily light to apply. Thanks to the corn starch, it has an almost mattifying effect on the skin, which will be perfect for warm weather. The inclusion of clay aids in absorption of sweat and oil, also helping to keep your skin clean and dry throughout the day.

And the scent! The blend of rose, neroli, and bergamot comes together with the coconut to create a surprisingly clean, floral scent. I had to put in slightly more of each essential oil than originally directed by Marie as my rose was a 3% oil, but I am endlessly happy with the result.

Even though it was placed in a cold water bath, I found it took a while to begin thickening. Once it did though it was quick, and I had to rush to get it into the tin after trying to take a photo. I definitely recommend using a spatula to mix it to ensure you get out any powder lumps.

To Buy (or dig out if you already have it):

  • Cocoa Butter (deodorised or non-deodorised is fine, I used non-deodorised).
  • Shea Butter
  • Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Rose Wax (or equal amounts shea butter with Rose EO)
  • Pale Clay of Choice
  • Baking Soda
  • Corn Starch of Arrowroot Starch
  • Rose EO
  • Litsea Cubeba (I used Bergamot, could also try Lemongrass as a possible sub)
  • Neroli EO

This will be my first time using baking soda based deodorant, so I'm hoping I won't have any irritation. But irritation can occur from baking soda, which Lise explains here. Many people successfully get around this by using a vinegar solution beforehand, but if this is something you are hoping to avoid, why not try Lise's bi-carb free deodorant? This is one I plan on trying in the future.

I haven't used the deodorant yet on anything but my hand, so I will be returning soon to update you on how it works out.
